Case description:

A customer contacted us to diagnose for his 2TB Western Digital blue 2.5” external hard drive. The Western Digital hard drive was used for production machine. It was used to store the recipe and settings of the machine. The hard drive was working fine but all the sudden the hard drive cannot be detected by their computer anymore. On file explorer it is not detected, but on the notification area, it shows that the hard drive was connected. He tried to eject and unplug the hard drive and reconnect the hard drive again, it shows the drive is detected and connected, but when he tries to access the hard drive. It prompts for reformat and when the user clicked cancel, it prompts for parameter is incorrect. He tried to unplug and plug into another computer, but the same thing occurs. The hard drive contains a database that was not backup to their server and it is needed for the machine’s operation.

Action (Solution):

After the registration, we proceed with the diagnosis. Our recovery specialist checked through the hard drive and found that the health condition left only 16%, but there were no clicking or beeping sound from the hard drive. The Western digital hard drive can be powered up and the spindle motor on the drive spins up successfully. The read/write heads of the drive were faulty and there are a lot of unreadable sectors.

The Outcome

The data recovery was successful, and we manage to recover the data from the hard drive. We transferred the recovered data to a new external hard drive for our client. He checked the data and happy with the result of the recovery.
