NAS Drives Data Recovery

Data Recovery from Mixed NAS Drives

NAS HDD Recovery

Initial Cause of Data Loss

A client approached us for assistance in recovering data from three hard disk drives (HDDs) removed from a Network Attached Storage (NAS) system. The drives consisted of one Western Digital 3.5” 3TB HDD and two Seagate 3.5” 3TB HDDs. The client could not access the files on the drives and suspected that the data might have been encrypted or corrupted.

Diagnosis and Recovery Process

Our recovery team performed a detailed examination of the HDDs and confirmed the presence of both hardware and software issues:

  • The file system on the drives was corrupted, preventing access to the data.
  • One of the drives had physical damage in bad sectors, further complicating the recovery.
  • Additionally, the data structure on the drives was disorganized, meaning it needed to be in its original form, which presented further challenges during recovery.

To address these issues, we first cloned the HDD with hardware problems to prevent further deterioration of the data. We then proceeded with data extraction from all three drives.

Data Recovery Outcome

Despite the complications, our engineers were able to recover the majority of the client’s data. Although some of the data was permanently lost due to file corruption and physical damage, most files were successfully recovered. The client verified the recovered data during an online data verification session and expressed satisfaction and relief with the results. We then transferred the recovered data to a new hard drive we purchased for backup purposes.

Recommendations

To ensure long-term data integrity and prevent future data loss, it is essential to maintain a healthy file system and implement proper storage management practices. We recommend the following:

  • Regular backups: Frequently back up your data on reliable storage devices or cloud-based solutions.
  • Organize files efficiently: Keep files properly organized to reduce the risk of corruption.
  • Check for errors: Run diagnostic tools regularly to detect and address file system errors early.
  • Power management: Avoid sudden power loss by using uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to keep systems running smoothly during outages.
  • Proper ejection procedures: Always follow the correct steps to remove or disconnect storage devices safely.
  • Monitor storage health: Use system tools to monitor the health of your drives and replace them as needed.

If you encounter data access issues or suspect file system corruption, seek professional data recovery services immediately to maximize the chances of successful data retrieval. Feel free to contact us for assistance with any of your data recovery needs.
