QNAP TS-251+ NAS All HDD Blink In Red

QNAP TS-251+ NAS Recovery

Qnap TS-251+ NAS Recovery

Client Scenario

The client contacted us urgently after losing access to their NAS. The NAS displayed an orange system status light, while both HDD indicators were red, suggesting a severe storage failure. The client was unsure of the RAID configuration and concerned about the potential loss of critical business data.

Initial Assessment

Upon diagnostic evaluation, our engineers identified the following issues:
  • Both HDD1 & HDD2 were degraded, indicating simultaneous disk failure.
  • LVM thin‑provisioning metadata was detected, confirming a more complex storage structure beneath the NAS interface.
  • RAID configuration was unclear due to corruption, requiring deep-level analysis.
Despite the severity of the situation, the data remained recoverable with the right approach.

Recovery Approach

To ensure maximum data safety, we followed our standard best‑practice workflow:
  1. Sector‑by‑sector cloning of both degraded drives to prevent further deterioration.
  2. All recovery work was performed exclusively on the cloned images, never on the original disks.
  3. Reconstruction of the LVM structure and RAID metadata to regain access to the logical volumes.
  4. Extraction and verification of critical data, including:
    • Office documents
    • Accounting files
    • General business data

Outcome

We managed to recover data from the NAS. All essential office and accounting files were restored, and the client reported zero data loss. He regained access to all essential business data, allowing operations to resume without disruption.

If you ever face the same situation, power off your NAS to preserve its data. Sometimes, NAS will attempt to fix itself and end up reconstructing the RAID structure.
