Client Scenario
The client is using a Synology DS220+ 2-bay NAS, with 2 x WD Red drives to store company financial data. There was a power interruption occurr. After the NAS rebooted, some folders were missing. Initially, they had access to the NAS normally for one day before noticing the folders were gone. Then they attempted to restore the missing folders from the Recycle Bin. But the restored files are not usable.

Assessment Result
Both drives passed inspection as healthy, ruling out hardware failure. The loss was causes by file system errors. The NAS powering off during a power interruption can leave file system and metadata inconsistent, causing folders to disappear from the path while the data blocks may still exist on disk. BUT, when restoring files from the recycle bin, it wrote the data with the same name to the volume, which will causes overwrite.

Conclusion
Missing folders after a power event are usually recoverable, but only if the data blocks remain intact. When folders disappear from a NAS, power down the unit and stop all read/write activity. Do not attempt restore from the recycle bin, repair utilities, or copy new data to the volume, especially those with the same name.
