Synology DS420+ Beeping and Inaccessible
A customer contacted us to recover data for his Synology NAS – 4 Bay, 4x 4TB hard drive. It stopped working like 1 month ago, the NAS started to beep, the status light shows an orange color and the light in the second hard drive is not on. He went and checked on the DSM of Synology, and it says the volume has degraded and the second hard drive is not available. He thought the second hard drive should be faulty and bought a new hard drive for replacement, but after replacing the second hard drive, Synology DSM failed to detect the new hard drive. He tried to remove the hard drive and access it on another NAS, but still inaccessible, he also tried a different slot, but it is also the same. He also tried to the soft and hard reset and reinstall the Synology DSM, but still inaccessible.
EHDR data recovery specialist checked through all four hard drives and the NAS. All four hard drives are detectable but inaccessible. Based on the analysis, some of the data on the drives might have been overwritten during the DSM reset and reinstallation. But overall, the data recovery will be possible. EHDR analyzes the drive and confirms that it is a Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR). After the confirmation, we proceed to clone all the hard drives for data recovery, all the recovery work will be done on the cloned drive instead of the patient drives. This is to maintain the data in the patient drive, if something goes wrong, a second attempt is still possible.
Our recovery team managed to recover all the data from the patient drives, Synology was set up again and all the data was transferred into the NAS. Recovered data is accepted by the client before transferring it into his NAS.
