What is Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

EHDR have a lot of experience in External Hard Disk Drive Recovery. We have many success stories of HDD recovery, but what is HDD actually? A HDD Is a data storage device that stores and retrieves digital data using magnetic recording. EHDR will discuss a few basic components of HDD.

A – Platter

It is a circular disk on which magnetic data is stored, both sides of the platter are used for data storage. Some of the HDD consist more than 1 platter. Numbers of the platter will increase the complexity of recovery.

B – Spindle

It holds platter of HDD. It helps to rotate HDD’s platter. The Spindle is very crucial to HDD performance because the precision of these motors determines the capacity and speed of the HDD.

C- Read/Write Head (R/W Head)

This a small component that move above platter. It reads and writes data from the HDD’s platter. It is small but crucial to all data. This r/w head will not stick to platter while reads or writes, it will only float on the surface of the platter.

D – Actuator Arm

A mechanical arm that move r/w head across the surface of platter.

E – Actuator Axis

A motor that rotate or move Actuator Arm to an appropriate position according to the Actuator.

F – Actuator

A main device to control the Actuator arm. It controls the position of actuator arm which moves R/W head to the appropriate platter surface based on hard drive status. It is also one of the crucial components to determine your HDD’s performance and condition.

Failure of Hard Disk Drive

There is a huge range of error causes HDD failure. It may cause by the motor, Read/Write Head, Actuator, and even firmware. The most sensitive part of the HDD is R/W Head. It was used as a translator to translate data from physical to digital. Users need to handle the drive carefully because human error tense to make r/w head faulty. In order to increase the life span of HDD, not to move your HDD while it is in use and put it in a proper location which can prevent it from falling.

Handling of HDD- Cleanroom

A Cleanroom is a room that has HEPA filtration to remove particles from the air. Class 100 Cleanroom is needed for hardware level recovery. The enclosure of HDD should not be opened at the normal environment as the dust particles may make the platter condition worst.

Summary

EHDR will always share what we know to end user. We hope that this blog will help you in understanding the basic of HDD.
